Charlamagne tha God is not celebrating after Drake surpassed Michael Jackson for the most No. 1 songs by a male solo artist.
During a recent discussion on The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne argued that Drake’s chart dominance does not necessarily place him in the same cultural conversation as Jackson.
Drake recently earned his 14th No. 1 single after “Janice STFU” topped the charts, officially moving him past Jackson’s longtime record among male solo artists.
But according to Charlamagne, raw chart numbers don’t automatically equal the same level of long-term impact.
“This is why I say numbers lie,” Charlamagne said. “Does Drake have the numbers? Yes. Does Drake have music that will stand the test of time? Yes.”
But Charlamagne argued there’s still a major difference between Drake’s commercial success and the global cultural moments created by Jackson’s albums.
“We know that a lot of the music Drake makes does not have the cultural impact of an Off the Wall or a Thriller,” he added.
Charlamagne has been one of Drake’s most vocal critics in hip-hop media over the years, frequently questioning aspects of the rapper’s music, public persona, and overall legacy. Still, Drake’s recent run has been nearly impossible to ignore.
His latest releases have dominated streaming platforms and the Billboard charts, with the Toronto superstar placing more than a dozen songs on the Hot 100 following the release of his Iceman trilogy.
