Lizzo is revealing why eating vegan was a health setback for her.
On Friday (June 19), the Bitch vocalist was a guest on Big Boy’s Neighborhood, where she discussed her weight-loss journey and why she stepped away from veganism.
Last month, the four-time Grammy winner was named a spokesperson for Chili’s baby back ribs campaign, which caught flak from PETA because she was eating plant-based for nearly three years.
As Lizzo explained around the 41-minute mark of the episode below, she was mostly consuming processed non-animal-derived food, which she says caused her to gain a substantial amount of weight.
“I was starting to have physical aches and pains that I could only attribute to having extra weight on me,” Lizzo said. “I had gone vegan, and I had gained 50 pounds being vegan, ‘cause I was consuming a lot of fake meat. I was consuming a lot of french fries.
“It wasn't working for me. And I looked up, and I gained 50 pounds. I didn't really realize it,” she admitted.
The musician explained that although she had “so much stamina and energy” while rehearsing and working out, she developed lower back and knee pain. Doctors, however, thought she was “healthy.”
For over a year, Lizzo has documented her weight loss, which she refers to as a “weight release,” and even revealed that she had briefly used Ozempic.
Last year, the musician was a guest on Trisha Paytas’ podcast Just Trish and explained that she ate between 3,000-5,000 calories a day while vegan.
“I still think that veganism is a very healthy way of eating and one day I aspire to be a raw vegan,” Lizzo said on the show. “I want to one day grow my own vegetables. I want to have my own farm. That's the dream. But right now, what works for my body and what my body needs to have energy and to function is animal protein.”
