Lizzo has found herself on the receiving end of some harsh words from animal rights group PETA.
On Wednesday (May 27), PETA slammed the Grammy-winning singer on X for her new Chili’s Baby Back Ribs campaign, writing: "PIGS WANT THEIR RIBS BACK. It’s about damn time you found a conscience, @lizzo."
The note added: "The truth hurts, right? Here’s the truth behind your @Chilis jingle: using the flesh and bones of an animal who was violently killed as an 'instrument' is beyond grotesque. What happened to you?"\
PETA also shared a clip from Lizzo’s Chili’s ad, which sees her play a flute made out of ribs, alongside a clip of pigs in cages.
The "What happened to you?" question is likely due to the fact that Lizzo used to be vegan. While she didn’t eat meat for years, she recently transitioned back to eating animal protein in 2024.
"I was so nervous that I would hurt people’s feelings or let people down," she told Billboard. "It would have been super jarring for me to be a vegan in 2021, and then 2026, I’m eating a big old rib and playing a rib flute."
Lizzo’s collab with the casual dining restaurant debuted this week. In addition to the rib-shaped flute, the ad also features her remixing the original jingle and adding a new verse.
"He want his baby back? Then if he act right he can get me back," Lizzo raps on the jingle. "I'll be walkin' past, while you're lookin' sad, saying 'I want my baby back baby back.'"
Separately, on PETA's website, the organization urged Chili’s to include more vegan options on its menu. "A single menu addition could open the door to more customers and show real leadership," the chain wrote.
