Oakland rapper and producer Ovrkast., a frequent Drake collaborator, approved of the five-time Grammy winner referencing Bay Area rap in his material.
Ovrkast. is credited on Iceman track “Make Them Pay” and previously co-produced "Red Button" and "The Shoe Fits" from For All the Dogs after being connected to Drizzy through Lil Yachty. Ovrkast recently stopped by Complex and spoke to Jordan Rose about his contribution to Iceman, and Drake pulling inspiration from Bay Area rap on “2 Hard 4 the Radio.” The track interpolates Mac Dre’s 1989 song “Too Hard for the F*ckin’ Radio.”
"The Bay Area, we're very protective," Ovrkast. told Rose. "And I think sometimes that gets us in trouble."
Ovrkast. added that Bay Area natives have a "natural" inclination to protect their musical artists and sound.
"One thing I learned about this shit is n****s hate the fuck out of some shit or love the fuck out of some shit. And it's like, I have no idea who hates and loves anything now," he added.
"The game has been reset. It's like, bro, you're not gonna please everybody, bro. You're literally not. Especially when it's a city where we have so much pride. You're literally not gonna. There's no way. There's no fucking way. It's impossible."
Elsewhere in the interview, Ovrkast. discussed finding out that his production made the cut on Iceman while watching Drake’s livestream.
Ovrkast. wouldn’t be the first Oakland artist to speak about the 6 God and Bay Area rap. Over the weekend, Kamaiyah, who collaborated with Drake and YG on 2016 song "Why You Always Hatin?" credited the 5-time Grammy winner for helping her attain a double platinum certification.
