Sydney Sweeney, fresh off launching her SYRN lingerie brand and on the cusp of her return as Cassie on HBO’s Euphoria, says people are attaching “words or assumptions” to her that are “blatantly not true.”
In an interview with Cosmopolitan’s Alexandra Whittaker, published Thursday (Jan. 29), the Housemaid and Christy star spoke at length about what she argues are unfair characterizations of where she stands politically. As readers will recall, this has been an ongoing source of discourse surrounding the Emmy-nominated White Lotus alum for some time now.
In the new interview, Sweeney connects this discourse to her Euphoria character, as well as “clickbait” at large. Asked specifically about people referring to her as “MAGA Barbie” on social media, she argued that art is her purpose, not politics.
“I’ve never been here to talk about politics,” Sweeney said, as seen here. “I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.”
Sweeney went on to state that she’s “not a hateful person,” later affirming she has no interest in speaking definitively about her political beliefs in a public way.
“I’m not a political person,” she said. “I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics. That’s not an area I’ve ever even imagined getting into. It’s not why I became who I am. I became an actor because I like to tell stories, but I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.”
Previously, Sweeney told fans she doesn’t “support the views some people chose to connect to” her appearance in a much-discussed, much-debated American Eagle campaign that debuted in 2025.
SYRN, announced to the world with a bras-draped Hollywood sign stunt, officially launched this month. According to a recent Instagram Stories update from Sweeney, pieces from her lingerie brand “sold out in hours,” though a restock is expected soon.
On the horizon for Sweeney is a sequel to The Housemaid, which has generated over $300 million at the global box office.
