Sydney Sweeney, like everyone involved with Euphoria’s long-teased return, can’t say much about what to expect with new episodes. She can reveal, however, that a higher power plays a central role in the characters’ respective journeys this time around.
The actress, who plays Cassie on the Sam Levinson-led HBO hit, has been on a press run as of late ahead of this Friday’s theatrical release of the Christy Martin biopic Christy. During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark on Nov. 4, Sweeney confirmed she had just finished shooting the latest batch of Euphoria earlier this week, adding that the cast has had to “wait just as long” as fans.
Asked if fans can expect high school to remain the drama’s setting, Sweeney pointed to what she sees as inherent weirdness if that were to be the case.
“No,” she said. “It would be a little weird at this point.”
During a separate appearance on Good Morning America, the 28-year-old Primetime Emmys and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards nominee reiterated that she recently finished shooting with Levinson and company. She also offered a potentially telling tease of where Cassie and others may find themselves when the show returns next year, hinting at a spiritual journey of sorts.
“I wrapped yesterday,” Sweeney said. “The only thing I can say is, it’s about God. People are gonna find God, some people are gonna need God.”
In October, HBO announced additional cast members for Euphoria’s new season, including Station Eleven alum Danielle Deadwyler. Among the previously confirmed returning cast members are Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, and Colman Domingo.
