Tom Holland says the thing he's most proud of about the next Spider-Man movie isn't the action or the spectacle but the overall message.
During an appearance on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Holland opened up about Spider-Man: Brand New Day and explained why he believes the film will resonate with younger audiences growing up in the digital era.
"I think my proudest thing about this new movie is the message of it," Holland said. "You know, it's a superhero movie at the end of the day."
He added that longtime Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman has a different way of describing the project.
"Tom Rosman, the studio head, kind of describes it as a ‘superhuman’ movie because I think the message is so important for young people in this digital age," Holland said.
The actor then elaborated on the themes at the center of the film, arguing that technology and social media have made it easier than ever for people to disconnect from real-world relationships.
"It's so easy to sit at home for an evening and just scroll through your phone and just turn your mind to mush and forget about how important socializing is," Holland said.
The comments come as excitement for Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to reach new heights.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for the film, giving fans their first look at Holland returning as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. The movie also introduces several newcomers to the franchise, including Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, and Jon Bernthal, who reprises his role as Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher.
The trailer quickly became a phenomenon online. According to WaveMetrix, via Variety, the preview generated 1.1 billion views across platforms, including more than 718 million views in its first 24 hours. The figures reportedly made it the biggest trailer launch ever for a film or video game.
The trailer surpassed the previous record set by Deadpool & Wolverine, which amassed 365 million views in its first day after debuting during Super Bowl LVIII. It also outperformed the highly anticipated reveal for Grand Theft Auto VI.
Brand New Day arrives with enormous expectations after 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed nearly $1.9 billion worldwide and became one of the highest-grossing superhero films ever made.
