Zendaya has addressed claims that she and her fellow Spider-Man franchise (and The Odyssey) star Tom Holland are married, albeit without actually confirming or denying anything.
Taking to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday (March 16), Zendaya, soon to be seen alongside Robert Pattinson in A24’s The Drama, first spoke about the recent spread of AI-generated photos falsely claiming to show her and Holland’s wedding ceremony.
As the Disney Channel alum and two-time Emmy winner explained, the images fooled not only some sectors of the general public, but also people in her own life.
“While I was just out and about in real life, people were like, ‘Oh my god, your wedding photos are gorgeous.’ And I was like, ‘Babe, they're AI. They're not real,’” Zendaya said, adding that “many people” were duped by the fakes, including some who were perplexed to the point of wondering why they hadn’t been invited to the would-be ceremony.
As a playful response to the Holland marriage chatter, which recently kicked into high gear when stylist Law Roach—with a smile, to be clear—said “the wedding has already happened” during a red carpet interview, Zendaya then shared a video with Kimmel’s audience. Though she introduced the clip as being intended to “clear the confusion,” it was ultimately a fakeout.
In the clip, seen above, a scene from The Drama is shown, with Holland’s face sloppily edited over Pattinson’s.
“That was real,” Zendaya joked. “I was there.”
Well played.
The Drama, also featuring Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie, hits theaters on April 3.
