According to The New York Times, three men were arrested in Mojave, California for stealing one million dollars’ worth of LEGO products. Police were called to the scene after suspicious vehicles were reported in the area on April 8. The suspects have been arrested on charges of cargo theft, conspiracy, and possession of stolen vehicles.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office released a statement about the incident. They said, “Deputies searched the box trucks and discovered a large amount of Lego products. Deputies circulated the area and located two freight trailers. A thorough investigation revealed that the trailers were stolen while in transit from Fort Worth, Texas, to Moreno Valley, California. The loss was reported to be approximately $1,000,000 worth of Lego products.”
The suspects were named as Jose Lopez of San Bernardino, Ruben Lopez Flores of Los Angeles, and Freddy Hernandez Polinar of Chino. Deputies recovered the Lego products that they allegedly stole along with the stolen freight trailers.
Although a LEGO heist might sound outrageous, some users on Reddit have been joking about how ‘a million dollars’ worth of the product isn’t as much as it sounds. “$1 million?” one person said. “That had to be about 200 of the Pokémon sets.”
Someone else added, “A $1 million LEGO heist sounds ridiculous until you see the price of the Millennium Falcon.” This set is currently priced at $849.99.
Some others were wondering whether the LEGO heist was accidental. “So they stole an Amazon truck en route from Texas to California,” one commented. “I wonder if they knew that it had LEGO on it, or if it was just a crime of opportunity.”
This is not the only heist that has been in the news recently. During the week of March 23, thieves stole 12 tons of KitKats from a truck in Europe. It contained 413,973 KitKat bars shaped like an F1 car.
