Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter dated on and off from 2000 until 2003, after meeting on the set of Lizzie McGuire, her hit Disney Channel series. Their relationship caused her eventual feud with Lindsay Lohan, who also dated him around that time.
“I started dating Hilary on my 13th birthday,” Carter said on The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch in 2005. “I was dating her for like a year-and-a-half, then I just got a little bored so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay.”
He also stated after getting back with Duff, “I ended up cheating on Hilary with her best friend. That's nothing to smile about. She really got her heart broken from me and I'm sorry for that."
Carter died in 2022 at age 34 after drowning in the bathtub in his California home. When he passed, Duff posted, “I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent… Boy did my teenage self love you deeply.”
On the April 1 podcast episode of Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, Duff revealed that she spoke to a psychic about Carter over the phone. She claimed this psychic had no idea of her identity at the start of the conversation.
“She’s, like, ‘Well, people are gonna start showing up for you,’” Duff explained. “‘And there’s someone here. Aaron—two As.’ I was like, ‘Oh my god.’”
When Duff explained it must have been Carter, her psychic was initially confused. “She was, like, ‘Sure is. What the hell’s he doing here?’ I was like, ‘Well, that’s my childhood boyfriend. And that would make sense to me.’ And, she’s like, ‘Are you Hilary Duff?’”
Duff did not share the message that she allegedly received from Carter. However, she claimed that it was “a really wild experience.”
According to E! News Duff is still close with Angel Carter, Aaron’s twin sister. “Our kids go to the same school,” Duff said. “She’s a lovely literal angel of a person. We’re very close. We talk about Aaron often.”
