Major story details from The Mandalorian & Grogu are now out ahead of the film’s global release, including a pivotal alliance that puts the New Republic in business with one of the galaxy’s most notorious crime families.
Early reviews and reactions from The Guardian reveal that Din Djarin and Grogu’s latest mission centers on rescuing Rotta the Hutt — the son of Jabba the Hutt — in exchange for intelligence about surviving Imperial factions still plotting against the Republic.
The deal comes through Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, who recruits the Mandalorian for what begins as an extraction mission. Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, is being held prisoner by an Imperial warlord played by Jonny Coyne. In exchange for Rotta’s freedom, the Hutts agree to provide the New Republic with information on Imperial remnants attempting to regroup after the fall of the Empire.
That setup pushes Din Djarin and Grogu deeper into the criminal underworld than previous trailers suggested. Earlier footage focused heavily on large-scale action — exploding AT-ATs, gladiator-style combat, and dogfights — but reviews now confirm that much of the film revolves around navigating Hutt-controlled territory filled with hostile creatures, mercenaries, and uneasy alliances. One sequence reportedly features the pair battling a giant serpent-like creature emerging from swampy terrain connected to the Hutts’ operation.
The film also expands Grogu’s role considerably. While the first teaser highlighted the character’s humor and Force abilities, new details suggest the story leans heavily into the evolving bond between Grogu and Din Djarin.
Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu serves as the franchise’s first theatrical release since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
The movie continues threads established in The Mandalorian while bringing back familiar characters from across the wider Star Wars universe, including Zeb Orrelios, Trapper Wolf, and several returning alien species.
Lucasfilm has spent months building momentum around the film through teaser campaigns, a CinemaCon-exclusive trailer reveal, and even a newly launched Ultimate Collector Series LEGO N-1 Starfighter timed to Star Wars Day.
