Tyler, the Creator has spoken out about being filmed in public after security cam footage of him hit the internet.
Late last month, security footage of Tyler was posted on Instagram, with the caption explaining that the rapper was at a bookstore in Mexico City. On Saturday morning (April 18), Tyler posted the footage to his Instagram Story with a lengthy caption about the frustration of being filmed in public.
"So annoying. Just existing, living, mind your biz and next thing u know it’s security camera footage of you just existing uploaded so folks can either prove they saw you or get some engagement they crave," he wrote. "I understand the excitement but the behavior is going to morph into everyone having footage or anything involving them uploaded for content."
After writing that he was congratulating a woman for her book store in the footage, Tyler expressed his intent to keep speaking up about his disdain for having private moments in public shared.
"I wanna be able to brush this stuff off but I’m gonna keep being vocal about this," he wrote. "Y’all know how I feel with the relationship people think they have with musicians/actors/etc just because they like some songs or a movie or clothing etc. Not over here. Space should be respected no matter how many lyrics you know. Love."
Tyler’s disdain for public photography and videos isn’t anything new. In 2024, the rapper went viral for getting angry at paparazzi outside of GQ’s Men of the Year event. He angrily addressed them before getting into his car, saying: "Y’all n***as back the fuck up, for real. I will hit y’all n***as and win the lawsuit."
After someone in the crowd told him he was "not very nice," Tyler responded with: "No I’m not, I’m actually an asshole."
In more recent reactions to being filmed for content, Tyler firmly declined appearing in a content creator's video while walking in Beverly Hills with Travis "Taco" Bennett.
