With both Jay-Z and Kanye West set to headline upcoming shows, a simple question posed on the streets of New York sparked a lively, and at times surprising, debate: if you could only attend one concert, which would it be?
Complex’s Jordan Rose stopped fans in New York to weigh in on the concert showdown between the two hip-hop icons. Despite Jay-Z’s deep ties to the city, many leaned toward Kanye.
“Kanye, I’m so sorry,” one person said, while another added, “Yeah, that’s a no brainer, Kanye.”
Others pointed to the energy of his performances.
“For the vibe, I would choose Kanye,” one participant explained, though they admitted they might know more Jay-Z songs due to his wife being Beyoncé. Still, the majority of responses favored Ye, with some citing his recent work.
“Kanye. Easy,” one person said. “Bully just dropped. That shit was fire. Kanye all the way.”
Another group echoed that sentiment, responding in unison: “Kanye, automatic.”
Not everyone was convinced, though. A few participants stuck with Jay-Z, pointing to his legacy and the rarity of his performances.
“I might go over to Jay… he ain’t been out in a minute,” one person said, suggesting the Brooklyn rapper’s limited appearances make his shows feel like must-see events.
The timing of the debate comes as both artists gear up for major summer live runs. Kanye West is set to headline London’s Wireless Festival from July 10-12, marking a high-profile return to the stage following the release of his latest album Bully.
Meanwhile, Jay-Z is performing those same nights in the South Bronx, recently adding a third date to his Yankee Stadium shows after overwhelming demand for the first two shows. The concerts are centered around milestone anniversaries for Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint.
