Tyrese is convinced that Tank cheated in their VERZUZ showdown because he was outnumbered, in terms of surprise guest appearances.
Tyrese sat down with Ebro on The Ebro Laura Rosenberg Show to not only promote his performance at the R&B Music Experience: The Legacy Series on Saturday, but also discuss the events of his VERZUZ event, which he compared to being “jumped.”
“I came into it as Tyrese versus Tank. I had one feature, and when my feature came out, he was rapping,” he said. “I didn’t even have nobody to come out and sing with me.”
When asked if he believes Tank cheated, Tyrese responded, without hesitation, “He did,” adding with a laugh, “They jumped Jody.”
“You’re insecure if you feel the need to have 17 n****s to come out,” Tyrese joked.
Tank certainly pulled out all the stops for his set, bringing out J. Valentine, LeToya Luckett, Jamie Foxx, and Trey Songz. Tyrese only shared the stage with Chingy.
Tyrese later revealed he actually informed Tank before the event that Chingy was his lone guest, to which Ebro suggested he played himself by doing so, and the “Sweet Lady” singer reluctantly agreed.
Tyrese also provided some backstory regarding his decision to wear a turtleneck for the VERZUZ event, which led to Tank poking fun at his attire in an improvised song that was eventually made available for streaming platforms.
Tyrese recalled seeing an interview in which Tank said, “Oh, if he thinks this is about the music, wait till he see what I’m about to put on.”
“In my mind, Ebro, outside of what he was coming there to do singing-wise, I was like, ‘Yo, this n**** about to turn this shit into a fashion show,’” he said. “So, that’s why I showed up with that shit on.”
Tyrese is certain that he deserves royalties for “Turtleneck,”, saying, “I inspired the song.”
“He seen the turtleneck, and then he just came up with the song on the spot, so he gonna have to run that,” he added.
Whenever he talked about the upcoming R&B Music Experience: The Legacy Series show, Tyrese made sure to take a little dig at Tank, who is also slated to perform, by jokingly mentioning that he was opening for him, or hitting the stage before him.
