Ebro Shuts Down Narrative That He 'Killed' New York Hip-Hop

Hot 97's 'Ebro in the Morning' was canceled after 13 years earlier this month.

Ebro Darden is addressing the claim that he bears responsibility for the supposed death of New York hip-hop.

Darden spoke with Peter Rosenberg on the latest episode of The Ebro Laura Rosenberg Show about the half-hearted speculation that the cancelation of Ebro in the Morning on Hot 97 could lead to more support for music from New York.

"Who are they gonna bring in that's gonna start deciding the music, and start breaking records in the morning?" Rosenberg asked, to which Ebro responded, "First of all, people don't know that, people who host don't decide what music they play."

Ebro said he and Funk Flex were the only ones on the station who were given an opportunity to break music. Rosenberg added that they actually used those chances and "played a lot of fun stuff, if you could catch it."

Rosenberg later joked that he could provide people with "all the bad qualities" about Ebro, if they wanted to come after him. Rosenberg was adamant that being the "death" of New York hip-hop is not one of Ebro's faults.

Ebro pulled the curtain back even further, revealing he has not "been in charge of anything administratively, programming, music, research, marketing, nothing at that radio station in a decade."

Rosenberg said people would be surprised at how things transpired after DJs' roles within the company were diminished in 2014.

Ebro also indicated that he would like to move on from the Ebro in the Morning cancelation, especially since the hosts were expecting that day to come for quite some time. Ebro said he, Rosenberg, and Laura Stylez spoke for over a year about the end of the show being on the horizon.

"As soon as [Donald] Trump got elected, I came on the radio, and was like, 'Guys, this might be it. 'Cause they coming after me. People are out of here this time,'" Ebro said.

He also reiterated suspicions that his progressive views were among the reasons for his show's eventual fate. After 13 years, Ebro in the Morning came to an end earlier this month.
