Latto shouted out her “real” fans for acknowledging the long-term “impact” of her new album, Big Mama, instead of letting first-week sales determine its success.
Big Mama, Latto’s fourth studio album, released on May 26 and is expected to debut at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 with 33,000 equivalent albums sold. Since Big Mama dropped, social media users have debated whether there’s been a decline in Latto’s chart streak, although her last two albums, Sugar Honey Iced Tea and 777, charted at No. 15. In a repost on Monday (June 8), the Atlanta rapper questioned those who are concerned about her sales.
Latto reposted a fan who was streaming Big Mama track “Onnat,” and said the song was her “shit” no matter “how much the album sold.”
“Real cuz why are ppl that don't get a royalty check worried about sales?? My music always outlives release week. Big first week # impact,” Latto replied.
The rapper has bigger priorities than focusing on album sales. Amid the rollout of Big Mama, Latto welcomed her first child, a daughter, with her longtime partner, 21 Savage. Following her daughter’s birth, Latto also announced that she would be retiring from music, which she seemingly backtracked in an interview with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis.
“Experiencing postpartum for the first time, you don’t know what to expect?” Latto said in the video below. “I kind of underestimated it. That was just one of those days where I was at home and overwhelmed with the album."
"I was going through it that day," she continued. "Today's a good day. I wouldn’t say I'm retiring today. Talk to me next week again, I might say, 'No, that shit was for real.' So, I don’t know. I’m going through it. I crashed. It is what it is."
