Kanye West and North West kicked off the weekend by shutting down Mexico City with a surprise daddy-daughter performance.
On Friday (January 30), the 22-time Grammy winner made his coveted return to Ciudad de México after last performing there as part of his 2008 Glow in the Dark Tour.
During the first show at Monumental Plaza de Toros La México, West brought out 12-year-old North West, his oldest child with ex-wife Kim Kardashian, who rocked the mic like her famous father.
Midway through the set, the pair performed West’s 2014 dedication to North, titled “Only One,” along with ¥$ tracks "Talking" and "Bomb." North’s set wrapped with her new song "Piercing On My Hand," an obvious dedication to her new dermal piercings. "Shopping in Japan, that’s where I always stand/ Went to school two days, then I got banned," the homeschooled pre-teen raps on the track.
Two years ago, North announced that her debut album, Elementary School Dropout, would be executive produced by her father. The title is a play on West’s 2005 debut, The College Dropout, which is available to purchase on vinyl via Complex Shop.
During an Instagram Live session on Monday (January 26), North said she planned to "drop soon" and said she’ll be attending this year’s Rolling Loud.
West’s Mexico City concerts have been called "one of the most ambitious productions in the venue’s history" by organizers, which was held just days after he issued an apology for his past antisemitic comments.
The rapper-producer also claimed that he had been having a "manic episode" stemming from being bipolar and having neurological damage sustained after his 2002 car accident.
"I lost touch with reality. Things got worse the longer I ignored the problem. I said and did things I deeply regret. Some of the people I love the most, I treated the worst," West wrote in an ad published in The Wall Street Journal. "You endured fear, confusion, humiliation, and the exhaustion of trying to love someone who was, at times, unrecognizable. Looking back, I became detached from my true self."
