Charlamagne Says Megan Thee Stallion Shouldn’t Have Been at Tony Awards

The rapper, who made her Broadway debut in 'Moulin Rouge' earlier this year, performed during the show's opening number and later presented an award.

Charlamagne tha God doesn’t think Megan Thee Stallion should have been at the 2026 Tony Awards.

The radio host made the comment on the Monday (June 8) episode of The Breakfast Club, one day after the rapper performed during the opening ceremony alongside Pink and other Broadway stars.

In the video linked here, Breakfast Club co-host Loren LoRosa mentioned chatter online about Megan appearing at the Tony’s despite cutting her run short at Moulin Rouge! The Musical last month.

"I agree because NBA players got to play a certain amount of games in order to get certain awards,” Charlamagne said. “She should have had to be in a certain amount of plays to be at the Tony Awards."

Is there a requirement to perform on Broadway before attending the Tony awards?

There is no real prerequisite to appearing at the Tony Awards, as invitations are extended by the show’s executive producers.

Pink, who was on hosting duties, has not made her Broadway debut.

Unlike the NBA’s end-of-season awards, the Tonys don’t have a participation threshold. As noted by New York Theater Guide, there were 62 first-time nominees at the 2026 Tony Awards.

Why did Megan Thee Stallion leave Moulin Rouge! The Musical?

Megan Thee Stallion joined the cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical on March 24, 2026, in the role of Zidler. She was originally scheduled to play her final performance on May 17 but left the show on May 1.

The rapper nor the production provided an official reason why Megan was leaving sooner than originally planned.

Megan was rushed to a hospital on March 31 during a performance of Moulin Rouge for “extreme exhaustion, dehydration, vasoconstriction and low metabolic levels.”

The announcement of her early exit from the musical came just days after Megan, via her representative, confirmed to Complex that she and Klay Thompson had called it quits.

Did Megan Thee Stallion receive a Tony Award nomination?

Megan did not receive a Tony Award nomination because she was not eligible for one.

As explained in the Tony Award’s official rules and regulations, only the actor who is contracted to play a role for its opening date is eligible for a nomination.

Danny Burstein, who originated the role of Zidler when Moulin Rouge opened on Broadway in July 2019, was nominated for his performance and later won the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
