San Antonio's mayor wasn’t afraid to let Charles Barkley have it this week, after the NBA legend's year's of disparaging comments aimed at her city.
On Wednesday (June 3), San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones stopped by NBA Tip-Off before Game 1 of the Spurs-Knicks NBA Finals, where she was given the opportunity to have some face time with one of her city's biggest haters.
After watching a montage of Barkley’s digs at San Antonio — which included him roasting the city's "big women" who apparently love churros — Jones said: "I learned a long time ago, you can’t teach courage, you can’t teach class, and Mr. Barkley reminds us of that."
Her directness prompted Barkley to laugh and say: "Mayor, I’m so glad to be back in your beautiful city."
As the group — which included Ernie Johnson, Kenny "The Jet" Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal — continued chatting, Jones presented Barkley with a gift.
"Chuck has lots of thoughts about the churros," Jones said. "We know he’s on a diet, but we know he’s not really on a diet. So here are the churros."
Her reference to his diet is likely a dig at Barkley’s weight loss. As of this year, the 63-year-old has lost over 100 pounds while using the GLP-1, Mounjaro. At his heaviest after retirement, he weighed 352 pounds.
Game 1 ended in a win for the New York Knicks, who beat the Spurs 105-95.
