Russell Wilson is opening up about the moment he became convinced Ciara was the woman he would marry—and according to the retired quarterback, it started with a prayer, a list, and a deadline that lasted exactly three days.
Appearing alongside the pop star on Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Wilson shared the story behind one of the most talked-about celebrity relationships of the past decade. During the conversation, he revealed that before meeting Ciara, he had gone through a divorce and mapped out a very different future for himself.
“I had a whole plan,” Wilson told Palmer. “I'm going to the Super Bowl. I'm going to be single for about 10 years.”
That plan changed quickly.
Wilson explained that after a conversation with his pastor, he sat down and wrote what he called his “five non-negotiables” for a future partner. The list included faith, loyalty, independence, compassion, and a presence that could command a room.
“I wrote down, prayed over—we prayed over that night,” he recalled. “Three days later, I met Ciara for the first time.”
During the interview, he also revealed that he had mentioned Ciara’s name before they ever met.
“Somebody asked me, ‘Who do you see yourself with?’” Wilson said. “I was like, ‘Ciara.’ They were like, ‘She ain't going to like you.’ I said, ‘She ain't met me yet.’”
Before announcing his retirement, Wilson had briefly weighed an offer from the New York Jets while also considering television opportunities. Ultimately, broadcasting won out.
Ciara, meanwhile, used the podcast to explain why the relationship worked from her perspective. “I do feel holistically like a better woman because of him,” she said. “The way that he loves me and speaks life into me... it just adds more to the layer of my confidence.”
The couple also reflected on raising their four children, building businesses together, and navigating public scrutiny. But it was Wilson’s account of writing down exactly what he wanted—and then meeting Ciara days later—that became the standout moment.
