Rashee Rice is out of jail and on track to rejoin the Kansas City Chiefs, closing another chapter in a turbulent stretch that has included legal trouble, an NFL suspension, injuries, and a high-profile investigation into abuse allegations that ultimately did not result in league discipline.
According to the NFL, the Chiefs’ wide receiver was released on Tuesday, June 16, from a Dallas County jail after serving a 30-day sentence for violating the terms of his probation. Rice had been booked on May 19 after testing positive for THC, a violation tied to the probation he received following his role in a 2024 multicar crash in Dallas that injured several people. Rice left the facility without speaking to reporters and quickly made his way into a waiting SUV after his release.
Rice missed the team's voluntary offseason workouts and mandatory minicamp while serving his sentence, but the expectation inside the organization is that he will be available when training camp opens later this summer.
The 26-year-old underwent knee surgery shortly before beginning his jail term to remove debris that had been causing inflammation, and a judge approved arrangements allowing him to continue receiving medical treatment during his incarceration.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid recently expressed confidence that Rice remains on schedule for a return.
"Rick has talked to him more than what I have," Reid said, referring to Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder. "Just making sure that everything was set there where he could do some rehab with it and still do the time that he needed to take care of."
Reid added that the organization plans to proceed normally once Rice returns.
"We're moving forward as normal as we go here," Reid said. "When he gets back, we've got to get him caught up in doing what he needs to do."
The release comes after a difficult two-year run for Rice. Last season, he served a six-game NFL suspension related to the Dallas crash before returning to action.
Despite the off-field headlines, the Chiefs still view Rice as a key piece of their offense. Since entering the league, he has recorded 156 receptions for 1,797 yards and 14 touchdowns, including a major role in Kansas City's Super Bowl-winning 2023 campaign.
