Claressa Shields didn’t mince words after Jake Paul fired off a controversial post about Bad Bunny ahead of the Super Bowl LX halftime show.
Paul announced he’d be “purposefully turning off” the halftime performance and claimed the global superstar was a “fake American citizen.” Shields jumped into the conversation on X with a direct response that shut things down fast.
“Please Jake, not today,” Shields wrote. “Puerto Ricans are not fake citizens. You would think that you of all people would support this as you have so many Puerto Rican women under your umbrella. What’s happening with ICE is terrible and we shouldn’t want to see harm done to anyone who is apart of America & a minority! Do better Jake. This isn’t right.”
When another user tried to dismiss the situation by suggesting Puerto Ricans aren’t affected, Shields doubled down. “If they are fake citizens like he stated they are. And regardless,” she replied. “Too much is going on in the USA today to be spreading hate.”
“Let’s rally together and show big corporations they can’t just do whatever they want without consequences,” he wrote. “You are their benefit. Realize you have power. Turn off this halftime. A fake American citizen performing who publicly hates America. I cannot support that.”
The remarks drew responses from across social media, including media personality The Kid Mero, who called out Paul for what he saw as hypocrisy. Referencing Paul’s recent loss, Mero wrote that if circumstances were different, Paul’s stance would quickly change.
He also pointed to Paul being “beat the f**k up” by Anthony Joshua last month while questioning the sincerity of his comments.
Bad Bunny, meanwhile, has been outspoken in recent months about Latino identity and belonging. At the Grammys, he said, “We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans.”
