Sony’s new State of Play event for the PlayStation 5 lived up to its much-hyped expectations by revealing a new God of War game, God of War: Laufey; showing gameplay of Marvel’s Wolverine; and announcing a slew of new games to get players excited for the upcoming months.
The biggest announcement by far was of a new game that takes place in the God of War universe. In the last two GoW games, Kratos journeys with his son, Atreus, after the death of his mother, Laufey. In God of War: Laufey, it appears that Laufey is trapped in the afterlife and has to deal with gods (or monsters) that want to make her life a living hell. Literally.
The gameplay looks every bit as crunchy and brutal as a mainline God of War game, with Laufey making use of a slender sword to quickly destroy her enemies. If the 20 minutes of the game previewed are any indicator, it appears that Laufey will be every bit as formidable of a fighter as Kratos ever was.
Another highlight of the show was when more of Marvel’s Wolverine was shown to viewers. The previously announced game had its violent combat detailed, so gamers can know what to expect when it comes out on September 15.
Other major games to be revealed were Until Dawn 2, which comes out next year; Control Resonant, which is out on Sept. 24; and ILL, out in 2027. For fans of the classic Stuntman series, it’s getting a new entry, Stuntman Hollywood, that’ll include references to the Fast and Furious series and Back to the Future.
And for fans of classic games like Gitraroo Man, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, those are all coming to the PS5’s classic library.
