GameStop Jokingly Claims Man Tried to Trade Girlfriend for Store Credit in Pursuit of PlayStation 5

No, you can't trade in significant others for store credit, no matter how desperate you are.

GameStop has seemingly tapped into the potential virality by way of outright fiction with an X post joking about a would-be scenario involving a man attempting to trade in his girlfriend for store credit.

In an X post shared on Tuesday (Feb. 3), GameStop detailed the surely fabricated incident while tucking in a reminder that “significant others” are not eligible for trade-in value.

“We regret to inform our customers of an incident today where an individual attempted to trade his girlfriend in for store credit towards a new PS5,” the official GameStop X account posted on Tuesday. “Store associate Nevaeh had to explain that our systems don't allow for human exchanges, even though she appeared to be in good condition. While GameStop offers store credit for used consoles, games, and accessories, significant others are not eligible for trade-in at this time. Thank you for understanding.”

The Facebook version of the post was worded slightly differently, including mention of “Store 1782.”

For those who might otherwise be fooled by these posts, here’s a key caveat: Celina 52 Truck Stop, a satirical social media presence known for sharing presumably fake posts in jest, is seemingly involved with this instance of tomfoolery.

In an Instagram update of their own, Celina reps added to GameStop’s jokingly delivered post by further joking that “Nevaeh Petty has been placed on paid [administrative] leave after we discovered she has been working part time at GameStop and was involved in an incident there today.”
