Fortnite’s new Mandalorian Island lets its players see the first 10 minutes of the upcoming Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The newly launched island, which is a partnership between Epic Games, Disney, and LucasFilm, puts players in the Star Wars planet of Nevarro where they’re new recruits as the Imperial forces launch an assault. To combat the threat, players can defend the city in squads of up to 12, and they’ll fight with bounty hunter droid IG-11.
Players can also spend time with the adorable Grogu and help him complete small quests. And if you spend more than 20 minutes on the island, you get access to the exclusive Mandalorian Sanctuary Loading Screen, where concept art from the film can be seen.
Aside from battling against evil, players can see the first 10 minutes of The Mandalorian and Grogu, giving them an idea of what to expect when the film hits theaters on May 22. Director Jon Favreau will even appear on the island’s amphitheater for a Q+A session on May 26.
Speaking of Favreau, during a special preview about the Fortnite Island, the director said that it “drops you into Nevarro with your friends. The team that designed and built the sets from the film was also deeply involved with creating our island from Nevarro Main Street to the Imperial Safe House and more.”
Speaking to Variety about the gaming event, Favreau said, “On ‘The Mandalorian’, everything comes back to detail… materials, lighting, sound. They’re what make the world feel real. Our team at Fairview Portals brought those elements together with Lucasfilm and Epic in Fortnite to recreate the tone and texture of that world, inviting players to a new way to step into it.”
James Waugh, Lucasfilm's senior vice president of franchise content and strategy, framed the activation as an extension of the franchise's generational pull.
"'Star Wars' endures because it inspires imagination across generations. Bringing that spirit into Fortnite creates new ways for fans to explore their own creativity, building and sharing experiences that reflect what the galaxy means to them and how they connect with it," he said.
The Mandalorian and Grogu stars Pedro Pascal, Jeremy Allen White, and Sigourney Weaver.
