Former New Orleans escaped inmate Derrick Groves has been sentenced to two life sentences for a 2018 double murder.
The 28-year-old was sentenced to two life sentences and 100 years in state prison on Dec. 12, following years of delays in the case. He reportedly laughed and smiled as Judge Dennis Waldron sentenced him.
Last year, Groves was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder for killing Jamar Robinson and Byron Jackson in 2018 at a Mardi Gras party. Groves also pleaded guilty to manslaughter last year in two fatal shootings for a separate case.
In his sentencing, Judge Waldron said that Groves was a fugitive from justice and would live the rest of his life in state prison.
Groves became the topic of public conversation earlier this year when he escaped prison in May, with nine other inmates, by crawling through a hole that was behind a jail toilet. Graffiti near the site of the scape read “To Easy LoL.”
Over the next few months as escapee after escapee was tracked down by police, Groves seemed to be the only one who vanished into thin air. He ended up as the last person to be caught, being taken into custody at a home in southwest Atlanta after law enforcement received a tip that he was inside.
While being arrested, Groves blew a kiss to the cameras as he was taken into custody.
Though Groves has been sentenced for the murders, he still has sentencing for his manslaughter cases to prepare for.
