Sophie Rain, arguably one of the biggest breakout stars of the OnlyFans era, argues that the depiction of the platform on Sam Levinson’s Euphoria is “damaging” to the community.
For those who missed the Zendaya-led HBO hit’s long-awaited Season 3 premiere this past Sunday (April 12), a key plot point revolves around Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie Howard, turning to OnlyFans in an effort to raise money for her wedding to Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. In the episode, we see Cassie dabbling in pup play amid a larger effort to bolster her status as a content creator. Later, she decides to take this approach to OnlyFans.
“Imagine all the unhappy men in the world,” Cassie says of the idea. “For just $50, they could get a personalized pic and text from me saying, ‘Good morning, handsome. Thinking about you today.’ … People just wanna feel special.”
She goes on to pitch her plan to an initially reluctant Nate over a candlelit dinner. He ultimately agrees, but under one condition.
“You promise me you’re not gonna show those [Cassie’s breasts] and your pretty face at the same time,” he says.
Speaking with Complex, Rain, who lists her age on social media as 21 (which isn’t too far off from the age of Cassie in Euphoria’s current season), expressed “love” for Sweeney while remaining critical of how Levinson and company have depicted the OnlyFans lifestyle.
“I just watched the recent episode and while I do love Sydney Sweeney, I believe the depiction the director created labeling OnlyFans as this easy money gateway is damaging for girls,” Rain told Complex, echoing remarks she made on X after the Season 3 premiere. “Only a few hundred women on the platform have made worthwhile money, and many women only make a few hundred dollars a month.”
Rain also criticized the character’s attire, referencing a scene from an upcoming episode recently teased in a trailer. In it, Sweeney, as Cassie, is seen with a pacifier in her mouth.
“I also think some of the outfits Sweeney wore, especially the baby costume, just horribly paints OnlyFans girls,” Rain told Complex. “I am very conservative on my OnlyFans account, and depicting us as catering to certain audiences that like us to dress up as toddlers is damaging to our community.”
As we reported earlier this week, the Season 3 premiere also featured Sweeney wearing a corset from her own lingerie brand, SYRN, which one could argue implies, intentionally or not, that Euphoria exists within the fictional world of the series itself.
At any rate, this Sunday (April 19), we’ll find out where Cassie’s OnlyFans journey takes her next.
