Guillermo del Toro Says He’s ‘Looking Forward’ to Dying: ‘I Think Death Is Really Good’

The latest from the endlessly quotable ‘Frankenstein’ director pairs well with his recent comments on AI.

Just a friendly reminder, on a Friday afternoon no less, that we’re all going to die. Yes, even you.

For further commentary on the inevitable perishing of every living thing, we turn to the endlessly quotable (and consistently brilliant) filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, whose Frankenstein is, in this writer’s opinion, one of the year’s best. During a a Kim Morgan-moderated talk as part of the Marrakech Film Festival this week, as first reported by Variety, the filmmaker told attendees he’s a “big fan of death” and questioned why anyone would want to live beyond the average lifespan.

“I think death is really good,” the Oscar-winning director said. “I’m certainly looking forward to it, because it’s the day you go, ‘Well, tomorrow I won’t have any problems.'”

This isn’t the first instance of death, fittingly it should be said, taking center stage amid Frankenstein promo. In October, when drawing a link between the use of generative AI and the Baron Victor Frankenstein character from Mary Shelley’s classic novel, played by Oscar Isaac in his adaptation, GDT proposed death as a better option than caving to such tech.

“The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’” del Toro recalled during a conversation with NPR. “And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I’d rather die.’”

Frankenstein, led by Euphoria alum Jacob Elordi as Victor’s creation and also featuring X trilogy star Mia Goth, is now on Netflix. Please make a point to watch it before you die.
