T-Mobile is facing customer backlash as they have quietly expanded upon one of their most disliked fees. The Device Connection Fee, also known as the DCC, is a flat-rate $35 one-time fee that customers must pay when they activate a new device or upgrade an existing one on their T-Mobile account.

This fee was initially introduced in 2022, and over time, it has gradually been applied to more situations. Certain customers were able to avoid the charge with a bit of a loophole, but T-Mobile is cracking down and saying “no more”.

T-Mobile Expands Its $35 Device Connection Charge

The latest change T-Mobile is implementing expands where this DCC fee applies. While this is not a new fee, the change significantly broadens who is forced to pay it, and who isn’t. According to The Street, customers could previously bypass this charge by purchasing a device straight through Apple or another third-party retailer.

The loophole is now closing, beginning March 27, 2026, as T-Mobile will still charge the $35 fee purchased through Apple when activated on their network.

This means that more customers, including those who relied on Apple for the workaround, will face higher costs when upgrading and activating their new devices. This change is a part of a larger trend with T-Mobile, as they quietly apply fees across more purchase channels, despite them marketing themselves as an “Un-Carrier” focused on resolving pain points from other carriers.

Customers React as Another Upgrade Loophole Disappears

The response to this change has been overwhelmingly negative, to say the least. Longtime T-Mobile users have begun to express their frustrations, seeing this change as a departure from the carrier's customer-friendly reputation. Social media has been flooded with complaints and posts from users who feel played and blindsided by the rollout. Users have already taken to Reddit to voice their concerns.

For customers who were able to bypass the DCC, the change closes one of the last loopholes for saving money on upgrades. Since Apple users get free upgrades basically every year, this can easily rack up charges that are just not necessary in the eyes of the customers.

This change is going to continue to create waves for T-Mobile and could affect customer loyalty down the line.
