DoorDash has begun rolling out a new emergency relief program aimed to help drivers cope with the price at the pump across the United States.

The company announced that specific eligible Dashers will receive weekly fuel-relief payments, alongside additional savings percentages at the pump. As reported by Reuters, the move comes as gasoline prices have climbed more than 30% over the past month. The U.S is nearing $4 per gallon amid global supply disruptions, and those on the road for work are feeling the burn.

How the DoorDash Relief Program Works

Drivers who log at least 125 miles per week while completing deliveries can qualify for these weekly payments. They can range anywhere from $5 to $15, depending on the number of miles driven. In addition to these payments, Dashers using the Crimson Debit Card will receive 10% cash back on all gas purchases.

This would mean some drivers could save up to $1.90 per gallon with the combined incentives. The program is set to run until April 26, only providing a short window for relief during the heightened fuel costs.

Gas Prices and How They Affect Gig Workers

Rising gas prices, of course, affect the average consumer, but gig workers are feeling the pressure more so than others. Drivers for companies such as DoorDash, Walmart Spark, and Uber are responsible for their fuel and vehicle expenses, fuel being one of the highest ongoing costs. Spikes such as the ones we have seen in recent weeks can cut deep into their earnings.

DoorDash’s move to help drivers reflects a broader trend across the gig work economy, with companies like Uber and Lyft bringing in new incentives to offset rising costs. The relief program in itself may not fully eliminate financial strain on drivers, but it does highlight how these companies are willing to maintain their driver networks. Even if it is in very small ways.
