Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube are in talks to reunite for a third Jump Street installment, with development underway.
As Variety reported on Wednesday (June 10), the stars of action-comedies 21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014) are expected to enter negotiations for 24 Jump Street.
Rodney Rothman, known for his work on 22 Jump Street and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is attached to return as director. Rothman also co-wrote the new script with Hill and producer Meghan Malloy.
The Jump Street series, based on 1980s crime drama 21 Jump Street starring Johnny Depp, centers buddy cops Morton Schmidt (Hill) and Greg Jenko (Tatum), who get into hijinks throughout crime takedowns. The first movie of the franchise, which was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, crossed $200 million at the box office globally, while its sequel grossed nearly double with $333 million worldwide.
Reasons for naming the movie 24 Jump Street—and skipping 23—are varied. Variety notes that the end of 22 Jump Street showed Schmidt and Jenko taking on other undercover missions.
In an interview with Variety last year, Tatum shared his belief that plans for a third Jump Street would be soured despite describing the script as the “best” he’d ever read from the franchise.
“I get asked more about ‘Jump Street 3’ than any other movie on the face of the planet that I’ve ever done,” Tatum told the publication. “I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film—if not more—because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time.”
