Donnie Yen, who starred as antagonist Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, has begun production on the character's spinoff movie.
On Saturday (April 25), the actor, who is also directing the project, confirmed the news by posting a photo of the film's clapperboard on Instagram. "Here we go…" the caption read.
In Chapter 4, Caine was introduced as a blind High Table assassin who comes out of retirement after being ordered to do a hit on Wick, played by Keanu Reaves.
Announced in spring 2025 at CinemaCon, one year after Chapter 4 crossed an international theatrical gross of $1 billion, Caine will follow the hitman's next moves after being freed from his obligations to The High Table.
The standalone film, which follows the first John Wick spinoff, 2025's Ana de Armas-starring Ballerina, is written by Mattson Tomlin, whose most recent credits include The Batman Part II and the adaptation of the Keanu Reeves-created comic book BRZRKR. Michael McGrale is a co-writer.
Yen teased Caine in a 2023 interview with Variety, joking that there were "always 'talks' in Hollywood."
"I’ve just been very lucky," the actor said later in the conversation. "Every time when I feel like my life has a downturn. Something good happens. And we’ll see what happens tomorrow."
With John Wick being one of the most buzzed-about action franchises in history, with each movie generating $1 billion in global box office totals, Caine could also see strong numbers upon its eventual release.
