Xbox is preparing to pull back the curtain on the next chapter of one of gaming’s most respected post-apocalyptic franchises.

On Thursday, April 16, the company will host a special digital presentation focused entirely on Metro 2039, giving fans their first official look at the upcoming sequel from 4A Games and Deep Silver.

According to an official announcement from the company, the event, titled Xbox First Look: Metro 2039, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET and will stream through Xbox’s official YouTube channel. The broadcast will deliver a world-premiere reveal of the new game, which marks the fourth main installment in the Metro series following Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus.

The Metro franchise has built a loyal following over the last 16 years through its mix of survival horror, stealth, and first-person shooter gameplay. Inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, the series centers on survivors living in and around Moscow’s underground subway tunnels after a nuclear catastrophe.

Metro 2039 is expected to continue that story after the events of 2019’s Metro Exodus, which expanded the series beyond the confines of the Moscow Metro for the first time.

In a statement announcing the reveal, Xbox emphasized the long-running connection between the franchise and Microsoft’s gaming platform. “Xbox has always been a home for the franchise,” the company said, adding that it is “honored” to debut the next installment alongside 4A Games and Deep Silver.

Xbox is also making the presentation widely available to an international audience. The Metro 2039 stream will include subtitles in more than two dozen languages, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

Accessibility options will also be offered, including a version with English audio descriptions and a separate American Sign Language stream.

Metro Exodus launched in 2019 and became the series’ most ambitious entry, leaving fans waiting nearly seven years for a new mainline installment. During that time, the franchise continued to grow through re-releases, expanded novels, and last year’s virtual reality spin-off, Metro Awakening.

Xbox said viewers who cannot watch the reveal live will be able to catch up through a post-show recap published immediately after the broadcast. The company also encouraged content creators to co-stream the event.
