Teyana Taylor is stepping into a major new role at Essence Fest. Organizers announced that the multi-hyphenate artist will serve as Chief Curator for the 2026 festival, putting her in charge of shaping the creative direction for one of the country’s largest cultural events.
The announcement, shared via the festival’s official social channels, positions Taylor at the center of this year’s experience both on and off the stage.
“We said ladies first, and we meant it. Not just on the stage, but behind the scenes too,” the statement read. “We are excited to announce Teyana Taylor is stepping in as Chief Curator for the 2026 ESSENCE Festival.”
The post also noted that Taylor will work alongside her creative team, The Aunties, to oversee “the moments, the surprises, and everything in between.”
Taylor’s appointment arrives as Essence Fest continues to roll out its programming for the July 3–5 weekend in New Orleans. The first wave of performers leans heavily into R&B, with Kehlani, Brandy, Monica, and Patti LaBelle set to headline the Evening Concert Series at the Caesars Superdome.
Hip-hop will also be represented with appearances from Cardi B and Latto, though the early lineup emphasizes vocal-driven performances across generations.
Kehlani, in particular, enters the festival cycle with momentum following the announcement of her upcoming self-titled album, due April 24. Her recent single “Folded” earned Grammy wins and a Top 10 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, positioning her as one of the newer voices sharing the stage with established acts like Brandy and LaBelle.
Daytime programming is also expected to return to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, featuring panels, activations, and marketplaces, including the ESSENCE Food & Wine Festival, Beautycon @Essence Fest, and SOKO MRKT. Organizers have indicated that additional performers and programming details will be revealed in phases leading up to the event.
The expanded creative direction comes after a challenging 2025 festival cycle. Records showed that organizers owed the Convention Center more than $456,000 following last year’s event, with a later payment reducing that balance.
Separate reports also raised questions about outstanding vendor payments, though those claims have been disputed by Sundial Media Group. The festival also faced criticism from some attendees over scheduling delays, access restrictions, and broader concerns about its direction.
At the same time, Essence Fest remains a major economic driver for New Orleans, generating tens of thousands of visitors and significant revenue for the city each year. Local officials have continued working with organizers to secure their long-term presence.
