Nick Reiner is now fighting a legal battle on two fronts.
According to Fox 11, the 32-year-old son of late filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner has filed a petition in Los Angeles County Probate Court seeking the immediate release of at least $1.5 million from a trust established by his parents decades ago. According to court filings, Reiner argues that money earmarked for him under the trust's terms has been improperly withheld and is urgently needed to fund his criminal defense as he faces charges related to the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
The filing centers on a separate individual trust created for Reiner in 1993. His attorneys claim the trust required mandatory distributions upon reaching specific ages, including a payout at age 30 and the remainder at age 35. Reiner, who is currently 32, alleges he never received the first distribution and that trustee Paul R. Kanin has continued to withhold the funds despite what the petition describes as clear instructions in the trust documents.
According to the filing, the trust holds at least $1.5 million in assets, although Reiner's legal team claims they have not been provided with a complete accounting of its value. The petition argues that concerns raised about Reiner's competence have been used to justify delays in distributions, despite the trust allegedly requiring mandatory payments.
The request is tied directly to Reiner's effort to retain prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson. Jackson initially represented Reiner after his arrest but later withdrew from the case. In a declaration submitted alongside the petition, Jackson said his firm remains "ready, willing, and able to resume representation of Mr. Reiner" if funding becomes available.
The trust dispute arrives months after a case that shocked Hollywood. On December 14, 2025, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead inside their Brentwood home. Authorities later charged Nick Reiner with two counts of murder with special circumstances in connection with the killings. He has pleaded not guilty.
Michele Singer Reiner, a producer and philanthropist, had been married to Reiner since 1989.
Since the arrests, public details surrounding the case have remained limited. Investigators have not publicly identified a motive, and court orders have kept autopsy information sealed.
Earlier reports also revealed that Nick Reiner had struggled with addiction and homelessness as a teenager and young adult, experiences he later discussed publicly while promoting the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.
