Insiders have said that the new live-action comedy movie from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, which is produced by Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free, is "outrageously funny.”
In a feature from The Hollywood Reporter breaking down the current state of Paramount, which is led by Donald Trump ally David Ellison, there’s a small update on the status of the Parker-directed comedy. Described as a live-action, “music-infused comedy skewering racism,” the film was originally reported to follow a young Black man who has conflicted feelings about depicting a slave in a plantation reenactment when he discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors had slaves who happened to also be his ancestors.
Insiders said that the logline for the project, which is internally titled Whitney Springs, is potentially outdated. However, only a small handful of people have read the script. Parker and Stone have full creative control of the movie, as does K Dot. The few people who have read it, however, described it as “outrageously funny.” Written by South Park producer and writer Vernon Chatman, who also created Wonder Showzen and The Shivering Truth, the movie currently doesn’t have an official title or release date, but is set to be released by Paramount Pictures.
Details about the movie have been closely guarded since it was announced in January 2022. Principal photography kicked off last year, but there’s no word on who is starring in the project, which has been described as an “ensemble” comedy. We do know, however, that Parker is set to appear in front of the camera, too, playing the mayor of the fictional town in the movie.
The movie was scheduled to be released in theaters in July this year, but was later pushed to March 2026 to accommodate reshoots. K Dot and Free reportedly requested the reshoots. “They’ll release it with closed eyes and gritted teeth,” an insider said of Paramount’s feelings on the untitled film. Paramount recently pulled it from its 2026 schedule, and a release date hasn't been reconfirmed.
The South Park creators have gone after the Trump administration particularly hard in the show’s latest season, and Ellison renewed their deal despite his allegiance to the current President. Ellison might want to reshape Paramount’s image in the age of MAGA, but they still have obligations with plenty of liberal and left-leaning creatives. The report on the status of the project also comes after it was confirmed that Netflix beat out Paramount to acquire Warner Bros. for $82.7 billion.
