Kid Cudi has recalled missing out on a recording session with Lil Wayne because he’d already gone to bed for the night.
On a new episode of Big Bro with Kid Cudi, the "Pursuit of Happiness" rapper sat down with his longtime producer, Dot da Genius, where they got into a discussion (around the 46-minute mark) about how he used to record music late at night when he was younger.
That's changed now that he’s gotten older, and he prefers to record earlier during the day. But when he got the chance to make the 2024 song "SEVEN" with Lil Wayne, there was a scheduling conflict that impacted how the song was created.
"I remember I was trying to get Lil Wayne on 'SEVEN,' and they were like, 'Wayne wants to do it,' and I’m like, 'Bet, bet,'" Cudi began. "I was like, 'Can he come to the studio at 5 PM?' They were like, 'Oh Wayne's not going to be in the studio until three in the morning.'"
Cudi continued, suggesting that this shocked him. "I want to be with Wayne in the studio making the verse," he said. Eventually, Cudi and Wayne's team came to an agreement about a studio time and made a plan to link up. Only that link-up never happened.
"8 o’clock comes, no answer. 9 o’clock, no answer. 11 o’clock, no answer," Cudi explained. "By then I’m in my pajamas like, alright, I’m about to go to sleep. As soon as I get in the bed, I get a text like, 'Wayne’s in the studio now, pull up.' I’m like aww man, guys."
When Dot Da Genius confirmed that Cudi didn’t go, the rapper revealed why. "I’m butt-ass naked, man," Cudi joked. "I’m sleeping in the nude. Then it just came to sending him the record and he’ll send it to me when he can after his late-night session."
Though that seemed like an unpleasant collab experience, Cudi revealed that he's eager to record with Wayne again — but this time, in person. "Wayne, we have to get a session." Cudi said. "I want to cook some more, Wayne."
In other Cudi news, the musician hopped on X on Thursday (May 14) to explain why he chooses to steer clear of industry alliances, focusing instead on his smaller inner circle of close friends and family.
"I distanced myself from a lot of alliances I had in the industry cuz these cats only care about fame and celebrity lifestyle and what I can do for them, no real connections," he wrote. "And all I care about is having my family and real close friends around and buyin some new vintage clothes."
