Shakira turned Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach into a sea of fans, delivering a free concert that drew an estimated 2 million people and set a new benchmark for live performances in the city.
The Colombian superstar hit the stage late Saturday night as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour, igniting the massive crowd with a set packed full of hits.
“I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you,” Shakira told the crowd. “And now look at this. Life is magical.”
The performance featured fan favorites like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Tortura,” and “La Bicicleta,” with Shakira closing the night with her viral “BZRP Music Sessions #53/66.” Between songs, she took time to highlight themes of resilience and empowerment.
“Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser,” she said.
Following the show, Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere said on social media that roughly 2 million people attended the concert, calling it a historic night for the city. Referencing one of Shakira’s biggest hits, he celebrated the milestone by noting that the “She-Wolf” had made history in the city.
City officials also pointed to the economic benefits of hosting events on this scale, where fans gathered on the beach hours before and vendors created a festival-like atmosphere, estimating the concert could generate significant revenue through tourism, hospitality, and local businesses.
The city’s leadership has leaned into these large gatherings as a way to keep momentum going between major holiday seasons, and early indicators suggest the strategy is paying off, with increased travel and bookings tied to the event.
The performance also adds to the momentum of Shakira’s ongoing tour, which has already become one of the most successful runs by a Latin artist, grossing hundreds of millions globally. That success is set to continue later this year when she brings the tour to Spain for a unique multi-night run in Madrid.
The shows will take place in a custom-built venue designed specifically for the event, aiming to create a more immersive experience that goes beyond a traditional concert setting with elements of art, food, and culture woven into the performances.
