A man died while setting up for Shakira’s upcoming performance at the Todo Mundo No Rio concert in Brazil.
The concert organizers revealed in an Instagram statement that on Sunday (April 26), the incident “tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show,” per a translation from People.
“First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital,” the statement added. “At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim's family.”
The state fire brigade confirmed to Reuters that the man was helping to assemble the stage for Shakira’s performance. The brigade also told People that the worker’s lower limbs were crushed “in a lifting system.” Before medical help arrived, other employees had “removed” the victim from the equipment.
Witness Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, who was reportedly on the beach at the time of the incident, said he saw “the structure on the ground,” heard that a man had gotten “trapped underneath,” and that people were trying to “pull him out.”
The Todo Mundo no Rio concert is still scheduled for May 2 at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
