Taylor Swift’s smash single “Love Story” was written while she was dating an older man.
The Life of a Showgirl musician, who was named among the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters by the New York Times, spoke about the stories behind some of her songs, including “Love Story.” The song was featured on Swift’s sophomore album, Fearless, and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 before being certified 8 times platinum.
“I think the first time I felt like, ‘I don't care if people hate this because I love it
so much,’ was when I wrote the song ‘Love Story’ when I was 17, sitting in my bedroom, mad at my parents because they wouldn't let me go on a date,” the 14-time Grammy winner said on Popcast around the 7-minute mark in the video below.
Swift added that she was dating “a guy who was too old.” “So I shouldn't have been on a date with him, anyway,” she continued. “And this is why you need to discipline your kids, because they might write songs that go No. 1.”
“Love Story” went No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Songs, becoming the first country song in history to peak on the chart. While it’s unknown who Swift was dating around 2008 other than a teenage Joe Jonas, she’s engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce. The couple are reportedly planning to exchange vows ahead of the 4th of July.
