Master P pulled out No Limit Records classics as the label went head-to-head against Cash Money Records for Verzuz at ComplexCon this past weekend.
Ahead of the event, the rapper and No Limit founder teased the event while on The Laboratory Podcast. As Master P explained around the 42-minute mark of the episode below, he didn't want his artists to solely rely on "hits," but songs that longtime fans wanted to hear.
"I got so many records, I was like, you know what? Instead of just... give me some hits. Give me what the fans want to hear," said P.
Master P added that the selection process was "hard," but with the legacy of No Limit still enduring, the music executive acknowledged that the New Orleans-based label "created a movement."
"I see so many people with No Limit tattoos on them, TRU tattoos, and it's like, man, we really did something that touched people, that made people want to be involved in this movement," Master P said. "Because they know we young Black men that wanted something out of life and went and did it."
Earlier in the interview, Master P said that the intention for Verzuz was to be a "celebration" for "young men watching." "I want to show other people's sons and daughters that, 'Look what we doing and we all could make some money. We all could be successful. We just got to have integrity and do the right thing. And don't be afraid to grow up,'" he explained.
The Verzuz champion was a toss-up for fans of both No Limit and Cash Money, as both labels pulled out legendary artists. Among No Limit's heavy-hitters were Snoop Dogg, Mia X and Silk the Shocker, while Cash Money brought out B.G., Mannie Fresh, Juvenile, and label co-founder Birdman, who aired out his former artist, Turk, on stage.
P's strategy did seem to pay off. LeBron James crowned Mia X as the MVP of Verzuz and Snoop Dogg's cameo was explosive following Lil Wayne's no-show.
Next for Master P is an upcoming album and documentary inspired by Verzuz, titled No Limit 5K Mix: Lost Tapes.
"Those diehard fans and the new fans, the younger fans that probably didn't get a chance to really feel my music—they could get a chance now to see where we at and see where we was at back then," he recently told Complex.
