Jill Scott took a moment to express her sadness about the passing of neo-soul pioneer D'Angelo.
On Tuesday (October 14), the same day of D'Angelo's death, the R&B vocalist tweeted a memoriam for him and revealed that she'd never met the four-time Grammy winner despite their mutual collaborators.
"I told you a long time ago-You ain’t gon understand everything & everything ain’t meant 4 U ,nor I, to understand," the "Golden" singer began. "I never met D’Angelo but I love him, respect him, admire his gift. This loss HURTS!! Love to my family that are family to him. I’m so sorry. R.I.P. GENIUS. 💔 💔"
Scott also responded to those who assumed that she knew that D'Angelo would soon pass, as she tweeted about him and a host of other musicians the day before.
"I feel so high. I love you D’Angelo," she tweeted on Monday (October 13). "I love you Erykah. I love you The Roots. I love you Bette Midler. I love you Moonchild. I love you Stevie. I love you Andre 3000. I love you B. I love you Miss Jilly from Philly. Blessing to erybody seeing this jawn. I love my time. 😍😍😍😍"
Scott shut down the speculation, although she was notified through a "mutual friend" just days before that D'Angelo was "unwell."
"I sent LOVE yesterday. I didn’t know he was leaving us TODAY," she continued. "Oooooooh my condolences to his family, his musical fam and fans. I am a fan and I mourn. D. Keaton & now D’Angelo. Hurts"
After TMZ reported that D'Angelo died after a private battle with pancreatic cancer, the musician's family shared a statement. The four-time Grammy winner is survived by three children, including vocalist Swayvo Twain, who D'Angelo shared with late singer-songwriter Angie Stone. Stone died in March following a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama.
