Tokischa shockingly shaved her head mid-performance as an opener for FKA Twigs, and now we know why.
The moment happened during Twigs’ New York City show on Saturday (Mar. 21), when Tokischa removed her wig on stage and trimmed her hair while looking in a mirror. After the show, Tokischa caught up with El Gordo y la Flaca’s Gelena Solano, and the Dominican artist explained why she got rid of her hair.
“It's something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “For me, it's really meaningful because I'm closing a huge chapter in my life with the release of my album, Amor y Droga, and l'm so, so excited, so happy.”
“I've wanted to do this since I was a little girl. I had never done it, never dared to,” she continued. “So l wanted to turn it into a performance as part of the message of the album, which is a message of self-love which is, ‘I don't care what anyone says, l'm going to do what I want to do.’”
Tokischa described the feeling as one of being “free.”
“It's really a feeling of liberation, of excitement, that I can do whatever I want, that no one can stop me, that I am me,” she added.
Her latest act of expression follows the release of her new Skrillex-produced song, “Surfboard.” The song is set to appear on her debut album, Amor & Droga, which doesn’t yet have a release date.
According to a press release, the project “is deeply personal, reflecting everything the artist has lived through and overcome on her journey to becoming the figure she is today, offering fans an intimate glimpse into her story.”
The Grammy-nominated artist is currently on a six-night run as an opener for Twigs’ Body High Tour.
