Before her star-making appearance on Drake’s blockbuster album Iceman, Molly Santana spoke with Complex and shared her appreciation for Nicki Minaj.

Speaking with Jordan Rose last year, Santana was asked what challenges she faces as a woman in the world of underground rap. She described it as “a fucking battlefield,” and said that she has sympathy for other women in the scene. “It’s fucking hard,” she shared. “And I hate to be the person to be like, ‘Oh yeah, this is hard, this is really tough,’ because the rewards outweigh all of it. … I know for a lot of women, this shit is tough no matter wherever you get to the top, it is tough.”

She remarked that even artists as huge as Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga likely went through similar things to her. “We got a lot more stuff that people can talk about,” she continued. “Women are interesting. People want to know what’s going on because women are so complex. We got it hard, but it’s okay because we’re women and that’s the gift. That’s a reward.”

She remarked that she’s especially a fan of Nicki Minaj. “Who wouldn't want to watch a beautiful woman fucking break it down, really give it to you on a song,” she said. “Listening to Nicki Minaj, that shit is just different. You could listen to Kendrick or Drake say some shit, but when Nicki come in and talk her shit, it's different.”

After collaborating with Drake, the 21-year-old rapper is bound to get more eyes on her ahead of the release of her next studio album, which is tentatively titled Black Punk. She’s already released a string of projects, including her second studio album, Molly and Her Week of Wonders. Earlier this month, Santana performed at Rolling Loud Orlando and brought out North West, the daughter of Kanye West, during her set to perform an unreleased collaboration.
