Lil Wayne doesn’t think he has anything to worry about when it comes to artificial intelligence in the music industry.
In a recent appearance on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast, Wayne said he considers AI a “challenge” and isn’t scared of its implications.
“I love that AI is what it is,” he said around the 36-minute point of the interview, which can be seen in full above. “‘Cause man, I love to be able to stand right next to whatever AI is… I’m still better. Still better. I love it, I love the challenge of it.”
He explained that the first time he saw what artificial intelligence technology was capable of was when one of his friends showed him, because they were “a little worried” about it.
“They was like, ‘Man, they got this AI stuff where you can just ask it give you a verse like Lil Wayne,’” he shared. “I said, ‘Give me a verse like Lil Wayne.’ And it gave me its best shot. I’ve done it on a couple devices… They all suck. So we going to be okay.”
When Camron Heyward brought up how Beanie Sigel is using AI to help recreate his old voice, he admitted that was a “helpful” use of the technology, but maintained that it won’t ever replace artists.
“I want everyone out there to know, we’re talking about a musician… [this] goes for everything. You’re a janitor and you’re fearing that AI will take your job? Do your job better,” he added. “Clean up way better. He couldn’t get this spot! You didn’t even know this was dirty up here!”
Lil Wayne is one of the most prolific musicians in hip-hop, and for him to hear that he’s not worried about AI or is considering using it is surely reassuring for fans. Notably, he’s made similar remarks in the past.
The rapper is next set to celebrate over 20 years of his iconic 2004 album, Tha Carter, with a tour kicking off later this year. He’ll be joined by special guest 2 Chainz on the majority of the dates, while The Game will also join him for select performances.
