FKA Twigs is explaining the reason why you won’t catch her doing TikTok dances anytime soon.

In a recent interview on the Broken Record Podcast, the singer and host Justin Richmond discussed the changing paradigms of the music industry, including the rise of apps like Spotify and TikTok.

While Twigs admits she wasn’t an early TikTok adopter, she told Richmond that she feels like she’s “bad at it.”

"Honestly, the truth is I'm literally almost 40," she said at the nine-minute and 36-second mark in the video linked here. She then quickly demonstrated a TikTok-style arm gesture and laughed, “I like to just do very extreme things with my body under my rules of things that I want to do. In terms of TikTok dancing, it's a very specific way of moving because you don't really move your body and I'm not from that school.”

Twigs described her personal style as extreme and self-directed, whether training in wushu, pole dancing, or other intense physical disciplines, and said TikTok dances simply don't fit into that framework. She explained that her approach to movement is shaped by decades of formal dance training, including jazz, tap, ballet, and commercial hip-hop, which she contrasts with the way TikTok dances are structured.

“I'm probably going to sound so crazy but to dance a TikTok dance, it's like making your head the center of the screen. So it's like this way of dancing where … the movement is limited to the frame,” FKA twigs added. “It's really interesting for me because I just don't move in that way because I'm just from a different time.”

She also reflected on how her relationship with her body has evolved, noting that she prioritizes mobility and longevity over trends so that she can “keep on doing this” for at least another decade.

Twigs concluded, ”I'm so in another part of my journey as a mover to donate my time to doing TikTok dances, which is fine, that is fucking so cool actually, but I just like can't do it.”
