Ebro Darden says he hasn’t finished listening to any Drake’s new albums yet, but think they’re right on time for the summer and Instagram-caption ready.
On Friday’s episode of The Ebro, Laura, and Rosenberg Show, the 51-year-old media personality kicked off the broadcast by explaining why he’s refusing to give viewers a first-day review of Drake’s Iceman, Maid of Honour, and Habibti albums.
“I'll be honest with y'all. I woke up this morning, I tried to listen on my way in and I heard some stuff I liked," he said, without specifying which songs. “I was thumbing through it. I wasn't absorbing lyrics.”
Peter Rosenberg was on the same page, saying he won’t have anything to add to the conversation until he sits with the album for the weekend.m.
“I'll say this: I need till Monday,” Rosenberg said, noting that he still hasn’t given a proper review of J. Cole’s 24-track The Fall-Off, which arrived in February. “I can't do this, ‘Album comes out Thursday night at midnight. I drop full review by Friday morning.’ And in fact, people who do that are hackadoodledoos.”
Laura Stylez agreed, saying, “We need time.”
However, Ebro did note that Drake’s albums are “on time for the summer.”
“Summertime Drizzy, outside, you know what I mean?” Ebro said. “People love this about Drake—I definitely heard raps that people will use as their Instagram captions. He’s got Instagram caption rap.”
Rosenberg quipped, “Can you imagine how crazy it would’ve been if Drake had been around in the [AOL Instant Messenger] ‘away message’ era? Yo, the girls with the away messages from Drizzy would’ve been insane.”
Ebro also touched on the commercial expectations for Iceman, saying that he heard the album would sell 600,000 in its first week.
“Remember when Taylor Swift's last album [The Life of a Showgirl], you could buy the album many different ways,” Ebro noted. “There was like seven different album covers, right? There was like different vinyls, there was different versions of the album. I'm not sure he's going to do all that but I heard speculation that he might.”
Drake shocked fans on Thursday night at the end of his Iceman Episode 4 livestream when he announced that three albums, Iceman, Maid of Honour, and Habibti would be released simultaneously on Friday (May 15) at midnight.
