It may be a little while before Serena Williams returns to the Today Show for an interview.
On Wednesday, January 28, the tennis legend sat down with host Savannah Guthrie to discuss all things motherhood. Williams, who is married to Alexis Ohanian, have two daughters together. They include 8-year-old Olympia and 2-year-old Adira River.
While the interview started out smoothly enough, things took a slightly awkward turn when Guthrie asked Williams about whether or not she may be planning to return to playing tennis professionally.
The question was motivated by recent reports that Williams entered a drug testing pool in late 2025, which may suggest that the tennis star may be considering a return.
Upon being questioned about a potential return, Williams appeared shocked.
“Really? Are you asking me that on the ‘Today’ show? Oh, my gosh. Really?” she questioned.
Guthrie pressed on, noting that she had to ask her the question. However, Williams only appeared to become more uncomfortable.
"People on the set are laughing. This is distracting. … I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now. … That’s not a yes or a no. I don’t know. I’m just gonna see what happens," she said with a laugh.
Guthrie asked if she should interpret this response as a "maybe," to which Williams seemed to shut her down.
“That’s not a maybe. Listen, I have two kids. I’m a full-time stay-at-home mom. When I filled out a form the other day for occupation, [I wrote] ‘Housewife,'” she said.
Despite Williams' apparent attempts to change the topic of conversation, Guthrie again asked about why Williams decided to re-enter the International Tennis Integrity Agency drug testing pool.
“Did I? I don’t know if I was out,” Williams responded, stating that she could not “discuss this” topic any further.
Following the slightly uncomfortable exchange, Guthrie attempted to clear the air.
“You’re not mad at me?” she asked, to which Williams shook her head no.
