Serena Williams is making a foray into a new sport.
On Monday, Williams announced she’s joining the WNBA Toronto Tempo ownership group prior to the team's first season. In a video posted to social media, Williams is seen bouncing a tennis ball, which later morphs into a WNBA ball, alongside the text, “New Court, New Game.”
The Tempo also issued a statement, explaining that the tennis icon will aid the team’s aesthetics by bringing it “to life visually,” per TMZ. The statement added, "[Serena will] play an active role in future jersey designs and will help forge unique merchandise collaborations with the team.”
Larry Tanenbaum, a member of the Tempo ownership group, also sang Serena’s praises.
"Serena Williams is an icon, a role model, and a force for change in the world," he said. "She's earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity, and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for—we couldn't be more honored to have Serena in our court."`
The news follows her surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, where she Crip walked to his Drake diss, “Not Like Us.” Of course, it’s not lost on us that her latest business venture is in the 6 God’s hometown.
While Williams never directly addressed her Super Bowl appearance, she later tweeted, "I think I proved 23 times over (not counting 4 gold medals) that I simply don’t have time for petty. All love and respect always nothing negative here."
