A Texas teenager who killed another teen is facing murder charges.
TMZ reports that Karmelo Anthony’s trial begins on Monday, where he will be tried for fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. The trial is set to start with jury selection.
The incident happened on April 2, 2025, when both teens were 17. They got into a dispute over seating at the track meet, where they were both competing. The two teens were on rival teams, and Metcalf asked Anthony to leave his team’s tent during the meet.
The situation escalated when Anthony allegedly brandished a knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf in the chest. Anthony said he acted in self-defense, claiming that Metcalf became physical with him when Anthony told Metcalf not to touch him. After the altercation, Anthony allegedly fled as Metcalf died in his twin brother, Hunter’s, arms.
Anthony was arrested, and a grand jury later indicted him for murder when Metcalf succumbed to his injuries. Anthony was released on a $250,000 bail and is currently under house arrest.
Last year, Anthony retained a well-known Dallas lawyer, and the teen’s family launched a GiveSendGo for his legal defense fund. According to The New York Post, racial tensions intensified when a spokesman for the Anthony family said that contributions would give donors the chance to “stand with us in the fight against white supremacy.” It’s worth noting that Anthony is Black, and Metcalf was white.
That statement apparently sparked a huge internet debate about race and prompted supporters to donate to Anthony’s GiveSendGo campaign. As of this writing, his family has raised over $600,000. Donations have continued to pour in, with as many as 70 people contributing in the days leading up to the trial.
Anthony is facing first-degree murder charges. However, because he was underage at the time of the incident, he won’t face the death penalty or life in prison. If convicted, he could face up to 99 years in prison.
